Taught by Suzanne Ankrum-Harris.
Suzuki Technique is a rigorous, physical theatre discipline that trains artists to bring their whole body and self to performance. The form connects artists to their innate, instinctual expressivity. Incorporating elements of ballet, Japanese Theatre, Greek Theatre, and martial arts; the technique strengthens an actor’s awareness of their physical power and expressive energy, allowing a deeper commitment to each moment on the stage. It is holistic approach to being in the moment with specificity, energy, and imagination.
Students will learn various aspects of the technique – where work is rooted in connection to the core, concentration, and focused movement. This session will include standing and seated statue work, stomping and shakuhachi, slow 10’s, and foot work. Participants will explore how to use the training to create and connect to character, impulse, objective and tactics. Connection of vocal impulse to physical work will also be explored within the form.
Registrants should come with a short, memorized piece of text to work with (monologue, poem or spoken song are fine). A couple sentences is sufficient. Please have clothes and space in which to move. Students may join live or receive a recording.
Students will leave the course with:
· Knowledge of the technique’s history, its use as a training form, and insight into the form’s use to create theatre,
· The ability to use the training for scene and monologue work,
· Experience connecting to impulse, freeing energy, and directing it into the work,
· Strengthened core, focus, and discipline,
· Methods to train themselves to use the whole body to tell stories, and
· A deepened understanding of their chosen text.
