Rudolph Laban’s 8 Effort Actions are often included in Movement for Actors training. But his system of movement and movement analysis goes far beyond “punch”, “float”, and their siblings.
Join Nicole Perry, a Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst, as well as intimacy director and choreographer for professional theatre and dance, for a deeper understanding of HOW movement communicates, in Body, Effort, Shape, and Space.
Each session examines an aspect of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System as it relates to character development and choice-making for performance. Perfect for students and professionals whether they are actors, dancers, directors, choreographers, and/or teachers!!!
Sessions:
Tuesday, Jan 4
Patterns of Total Body Connectivity. What body parts we use in our movement, and the configuration of them, can give a lot of information about how our character moves through both their internal and external worlds.
See Nicole’s blog post about The Creature in National Theatre’s Frankenstein for an analysis of the PTBCs in performance.
Tuesday, Jan 11
Effort and its Shape Quality Affinities. Each Effort Factor in L/BMS has a correlating Jungian psychological factor! Use the Effort Factors to express how your character invests their mental and/or physical energy.
The Elements of each Factor also have an affinity to a Quality of Shaping that can be used to help highlight the message, or choose a disaffinity for comedy or conflict!
Tuesday, Jan 18
Shape Forms and Modes of Shape Change. Since the Shape Category really deals with the outer form, it is incredibly important and useful for performers! This session explores the Shape Forms and Modes of Shape Change.
Nicole finds the Modes incredibly useful in her work in Intimacy Choreography.
Tuesday, Jan 25
Kinespheres and Pathways. The approach to and size of our character’s space can provide information about them, as can the pathways they use to cover space. Explore the interpretative messages of navigating space in our final session.
You can register for one or all of the sessions! Recordings will be available for those unable to make the live times.
$25/class or $90 for all 4! Full and partial scholarships are available, as well as student pricing. Please email info@momentumstage.org .
Discounts given for those who have already purchased one of our Laban Online Courses!
