How do humans continue to be generative during times of great extraction and destruction?
This workshop, The Essentials of Trauma-Informed Creative Practices, is for creatives in the arts and education who are interested in navigating the creation of new work during difficult times. This essentials workshops will dive into the primary principles of the method in order for participants to be able to fold it into their personal and professional practices. With an emphasis on educational content, the facilitator will explore the brain science behind stress, burnout, trauma, and creativity. Key discussion points will include: the stress cycle, trauma stewardship, trauma exposure responses, types of creativity, and our autonomic nervous system.
What to Expect: In general, everything is an invitation. You can engage as much as you feel comfortable, in the ways you feel comfortable throughout the workshop. There will be time to reflect and ask questions built into each hour, as well as moments to ground, center, and be present with ourselves. The workshop will be a combination of reflection, discussion, and lecture. Participants are encouraged to take hand-written notes and be prepared for some movement based practices.

This workshop is led by Molly W. Schenck. Schenck is a multi-hyphenated artist and somatic practitioner who is fascinated with human movement (including dance, physical theater, movement modalities in the fitness world, social justice movements, how people navigate societal systems/structures, and the movements of creativity).She is also interested in what interrupts the full expression of movement (ex. Stress, trauma, burnout, physical obstacles, boundaries, chronic pain/illness, etc.). Whether she is devising a new performance piece or in the studio pushing paint around, she utilizes various art forms as a catalyst to understand humans and promote transformation. She is the author of Trauma-informed Teaching Practices for Dance Educators and specializes in the intersection of trauma and creativity. She is also the Founder and Creative Producer of Grey Box Collective. Grey Box Collective is an interdisciplinary, experimental, post-dramatic, trauma-informed arts organization that creates projects around topics of social and emotional wellbeing (i.e. makes weird art about tough stuff) and is located in Phoenix, AZ (greyboxcollective.com).
