Creating a Pedagogy and Ethics of Teaching With(out) Touch

Why this Course?

A conscientious examination of the role of touch in teaching movement.

This online course will help you examine your methods of teaching, and create an “Ethics and Pedagogy Teaching with(out) of Touch” as a Movement Specialist.

This course was beneficial on so many levels- both for providing me with new information about the ethics of touch in the classroom and providing some reassurance for things I was already doing in my classes.

Who is this Course for?

While this course is geared mainly towards teachers, Directors, and Choreographers at the school, university, and professional levels can also benefit from examining their use of touch in communication with performers.

I suggest all dance teachers, no matter what setting or level, take this course.

Why learn with Momentum Stage?

This course was created and is led by Nicole Perry, an Intimacy Choreographer/Director and Certified Laban Movement Analyst. A key tenant of Intimacy Work for Stage or Screen is “not stepping in”. Intimacy Directors/Choreographers are trained to convey movement patterns and make corrections verbally, without touching performers. The pedagogy of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System values touch as a teaching method but has developed a specific language and application of touch, to be conscientiously effective and ethical. Nicole’s training in both of these fields has combined to create a unique course for Movement Specialists in Dance and Drama to create an “Ethics and Pedagogy of Teaching with(out) Touch”!

This course has previously been offered through NDEO (National Dance Education Organization) and LIMS (the Laban Institute of Movement Studies NY).

What is in this Course?

  • 6 weeks of live classes (9 hours class time+practical exercises, approximately 12 hour total time commitment), Tuesdays at 7pm ET (week of Thanksgiving is off)

  • Participants will receive a certificate of completion to turn in for Professional Development hours

  • Feedback from the community on practical application exercises

  • Recorded content

I appreciated the time we were given to reflect on our own practices and examine how we could do things differently. I also appreciated the group discussions, learning from others taking this course.
